House Shifting Tips for a Stress-Free Move

Moving stress is mostly a logistics problem. These habits remove most of it before moving day arrives.

Nobody describes a house move as relaxing, but the difference between a hard move and a manageable one comes down to a handful of habits — most of them decided in the two weeks beforehand rather than on the day itself.

Label for the destination, not the origin

Writing 'kitchen' on a carton tells the crew where it came from. Writing 'kitchen — new flat, upper cabinets' tells them where it goes. Labelling by destination room turns unloading into a directed process instead of a pile in the hallway.

Pack in the order you will unpack

Things you need immediately — bedding, a kettle, basic utensils, toiletries — should be packed last and loaded last, which means they come off the vehicle first. Rarely used items get packed first and travel deepest.

Keep one box that never goes on the vehicle

Documents, jewellery, medicines, chargers, keys and anything irreplaceable travels with you. This single habit prevents most moving-day anxiety, because the items you would genuinely worry about are never out of your sight.

Sort out access before the vehicle arrives

Lift bookings, parking space, security permissions and gate timings cause more moving-day delays than packing ever does. Confirm all four at both addresses in advance.

  • Book the service lift at both buildings if one exists
  • Reserve parking as close to the entrance as possible
  • Inform security about the crew and the vehicle
  • Check whether the building restricts moving hours

Plan for children and pets

Moving day involves open doors, heavy items and constant movement. Arranging for children and pets to be elsewhere for the loading window is safer and makes the work faster for everyone.

Set up the bedroom first

At the new home, assemble beds and make them before anything else. Unpacking always takes longer than planned, and the difference between a good first night and a bad one is whether you had to build a bed at midnight.
